21 Texas Senior Discounts Most People Never Ask For
The age, the day where there is one, and what it's worth, for 21 real Texas senior discounts and benefits, from grocery day to the property tax break.

The short answer: Texas seniors can save at Walgreens, Ross, Kohl's, Michaels and Goodwill, usually starting at 55 or 60. Add Luby's senior meals at 55, savings at participating Denny's for AARP members of any age, half-price transit in Dallas and Houston, and cheaper state park entry and fishing licenses at 65. State programs save most: the over-65 homestead exemption, tuition-free college classes, SNAP, Medicaid and energy help.

Fifty-five at Walgreens. Sixty at Kohl's. Sixty-five at the gate of a Texas state park. Seventy before a Houston bus ride costs nothing at all.
That's why so many people get told they're "too young," or never get offered anything. Every store and agency picks its own age, its own day and its own rules. Most of them wait for you to ask. Some of the discounts passed around online aren't real at all.
So here's what Texas stores and agencies actually offer right now, with the age, the day and what to bring. It starts with grocery day and builds to a tax break that can be worth hundreds of dollars a year to a homeowner over 65.
21Brookshire's grocery discount on Tuesdays and Thursdays
If you shop at Brookshire's Food & Pharmacy, Tuesday and Thursday are the days to fill the cart. On both days, customers 60 and older save 5 percent on their grocery purchase.
Plenty of lists say Tuesday only. Thursday counts too, which helps if Tuesday is already taken by a doctor's appointment or the grandkids.
It's one of the few grocery senior discounts in Texas tied to a named chain. Before your first big trip, stop at the service desk and ask two things: whether you need a store card for it, and what it leaves out.
20Walgreens Seniors Day, 20 percent off at 55
Put the first Tuesday of every month on the calendar. That's Seniors Day at Walgreens. On that day, myWalgreens members 55 and older get 20 percent off eligible regular-price items in the store.
myWalgreens is free to join, so sign up before the day comes. The date can shift around holidays, so check the week before.
Shopping online instead? The code SENIOR20 works during Seniors Day week. For November 2026, the online offer runs Nov. 1 through Nov. 7.
The 20 percent skips a long list: pharmacy items and services, dairy, alcohol and tobacco. It also skips stamps, gift cards, lottery tickets, money orders, transit passes and cold medicine with pseudoephedrine. Plan the trip around the shelves, not the pharmacy counter.
19Ross Dress for Less senior discount on Tuesdays
At Ross, shoppers 55 or older get 10 percent off in-store purchases every Tuesday, according to AARP's list of store discounts.
Ross doesn't post this on a page of its own that we could find, so say it before the scanning starts: "Do you do the Tuesday senior discount here?" Have your driver's license ready in case they want to see it.
18Kohl's senior discount on Wednesdays
Kohl's sets the bar higher than most: 60, not 55. On Wednesdays, shoppers 60 or older get 15 percent off in-store purchases.
The discount is in store only. Before making a special Wednesday trip, compare the discounted store price with the online price and the cost of getting there. Ask the cashier how it combines with any other offer you're holding.
17Michaels Rewards senior discount, every day
This one doesn't care what day it is. Michaels Rewards members 55 or older always get 10 percent off their purchases, sale items included, in stores and online.
The membership is the key, so join Michaels Rewards first. It suits anyone who frames photos, quilts, or buys supplies for a grandchild's school project. Michaels sets its own exclusions, so ask which items qualify before you pay, then make sure the discount shows up on your receipt.
16Goodwill senior days, set by each Texas region
Goodwill's senior day depends on which part of Texas you shop in: each regional Goodwill runs its own stores and picks its own day.
In the Austin area, Goodwill Central Texas takes 30 percent off every Tuesday for shoppers 55 and older. Show a valid ID at checkout. It works at its donation centers and retail stores, but not at its Outlet stores.
Goodwill West Texas holds its senior discount day on Mondays and doesn't list a percentage.
Elsewhere, 55-plus shoppers may get anywhere from 10 to 30 percent off, depending on the location, and not every store takes part. Find the Goodwill that runs the store nearest you, check its sales page, or call to find out which day it uses.
15Luby's Senior LuAnn plate after 3 p.m.
At Luby's, the senior deal is a plate called the Senior LuAnn. You get a half portion of a selected LuAnn entrée, two sides and a roll, listed at $8.49 when we checked in November 2026.
It's for ages 55 and up, and you'll need ID. It's served daily after 3 p.m., which makes it an early supper.
It suits anyone who's tired of paying for a full plate and taking half of it home. Luby's page isn't dated, so confirm the price when you order.
14Denny's discount for AARP members
Here's one that has nothing to do with age. AARP members get 15 percent off the check at participating Denny's locations, up to $10 off.
Hand over your AARP card with the check. For a pickup order, give your member number over the phone.
It doesn't cover alcohol, the Everyday Value Slam, the Super Slam, merchandise, gift cards or online orders. It also can't be combined with Original Grand Slam promotions or other offers. If you're ordering a Super Slam, ask whether anything else on the check qualifies.
13AARP membership, the key to more discounts
Do you have to be 50 to join AARP? No. Anyone 18 or older can join, even though many people assume otherwise.
It costs $15 for the first year if you sign up for automatic renewal, then $20 a year. You can add a spouse or another adult at your address as a second member for free.
Is it worth it? AARP members get $40 off a Walmart+ annual membership, which covers the $15 first-year dues more than twice.
If you already pay for Walmart+, you can still use it; the discount starts when your current billing cycle ends. To claim it, click "Get Started" on AARP's Walmart+ page or call 1-800-924-9206. Add a few Denny's breakfasts and it pays for itself. If you'd use neither, it may not.
Many people say a member deal didn't work at their local store. Before you count on one, look it up on AARP's benefits pages and read the conditions.
12DART reduced fare for Dallas riders 65 and up
In Dallas, riders 65 and older pay 50 percent of the public fare on DART. You'll need a DART-issued photo ID to ride at the reduced fare, and people approved through DART's online reduced fare page get a Tap Card. Call 214-979-1111 to confirm what you'll receive. It's a good fit for anyone who has stopped driving downtown and is tired of paying for parking at the doctor's office.
11METRO Houston senior fare card, free at 70
At 65 in Houston, a METRO ride drops from $1.25 to 60 cents. At 70, it's free.
Both use the RideMETRO Discount Fare Card. To get one, bring a government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth. You can apply online through the METRO Online RideStore or in person at a RideStore. The card comes in the mail.
If you turned 70 this year and still pay at the farebox, you're paying for rides you could take for nothing.
10Houston Zoo senior tickets and membership
Buy before you go: the Houston Zoo doesn't sell tickets on site. Seniors 65 and older get 20 percent off when they book online.
Grandparents should look at the Senior 65+ Membership. It's $189 a year and covers two named adults 65 or older, plus up to five children ages 3 to 21, as long as one named adult is with them.
A quick test: if you'd take the grandkids more than a couple of times a year, price out those trips at the online rate, with 20 percent off for anyone 65 or older. Compare that with $189 before your next visit.
9Space Center Houston senior tickets at 65
Space Center Houston's senior ticket price starts at 65, not 62 as some websites say.
The senior discount itself is small, about $2 a ticket. Where you buy matters more: online tickets run $5 less than the box office for adults and seniors. Prices change by date, so pick your day first.
8Texas state park senior passports
Yes, if you're a Texas resident 65 or older. The Senior Texas Parklands Passport costs nothing. With it, you and a companion pay half the entry fee, rounded to the next whole dollar.
You get it at any state park. Show your driver's license, birth certificate or another document that confirms your age, identity and address.
If you were born before Sept. 1, 1930, ask for the Senior Legacy passport instead. You and a companion get in free.
If you're out at a park every month, compare the regular $70 pass against half-price entry at your favorite park. Neither page says whether the senior passports cover camping, so ask at the park office before you book a site.
7Senior hunting and fishing licenses
If you're a Texas resident 65 or older, the Senior Super Combo is $32. The regular version costs $68.
It covers resident hunting and fishing licenses, plus the archery, freshwater, saltwater, upland game bird and migratory game bird endorsements. It doesn't include the Federal Duck Stamp.
If you only fish, a single senior fishing license costs less. Most licenses go on sale Aug. 15 and run through Aug. 31 of the next year, so buying close to Aug. 15 gives you the most time. Check the expiration date before you pay.
6Tuition exemption at Texas public colleges at 65
At 65, you may not have to pay tuition for a Spanish, Texas history or painting class taken for credit.
A state law lets students 65 or older skip tuition on up to six semester credit hours a semester. At UT Arlington, you apply before registering, seats depend on space, and mandatory fees still apply.
Each college adds its own rules. Dallas College says you must be 65 at registration, a Texas resident for at least 12 months and a current Dallas County resident. You also can't be seeking a degree or applying for financial aid. The waiver doesn't cover continuing education classes that charge tuition.
Before you pick a class, call the registrar at the college nearest you to find out how its senior tuition exemption works.
5CEAP energy bill help for Texas seniors
When an August electric bill lands that you can't cover, there's a program built for exactly that. CEAP is designed to help low-income households meet their immediate energy needs. Elderly households are among those that get priority.
It's run through local agencies, and which one handles CEAP depends on your county. Search "CEAP" plus your county's name to find yours, and call before the next big bill rather than after.
As one example, West Texas Opportunities in Lamesa handles CEAP for 18 counties, and household income there can't be more than 150 percent of the federal poverty level. If you live in that area, call 806-872-8354.
4Texas SNAP short application at 60
If everyone in your home is 60 or older, gets disability payments, or a mix of both, you can use a shorter SNAP application. If you're approved, it lasts three years instead of the usual six months.
You still have to qualify for SNAP itself. The shorter form only cuts the paperwork.
Apply at YourTexasBenefits.com or at a local HHS office. If you'd rather fill out paper, call 2-1-1 and ask for a paper application.
3Medicaid for the Elderly and People with Disabilities
Many people assume Medicaid isn't for them once they have Medicare, and that isn't always right. Texas says you might be able to get Medicaid even if you're already on Medicare.
The program covers checkups, medicine and vaccines, hospital care, X-rays and lab work, vision and hearing care, and home and personal care. It also covers nursing home care. It's for adults 65 and older and people with disabilities who fit one of the state's coverage groups.
It matters most if you or a spouse may soon need help at home or a nursing home. Apply at yourtexasbenefits.com, through your local Aging and Disability Resource Center, or by calling 2-1-1.
2Property tax deferral and installment plans
If you're 65 or older and own your home, Texas gives you two ways to handle the property tax bill when one lump sum is too much.
The first is a deferral, which means putting the homestead tax off. It isn't forgiven: it builds 5 percent interest a year, but the usual penalties don't pile up while it's in place.
To set it up, you file an affidavit with your appraisal district. Once you no longer own and live in the home, the deferred tax doesn't become delinquent until the 181st day after the tax office delivers a delinquency notice. Before choosing it, ask your appraisal district when payment would be due.
The second is the installment plan: four equal payments with no penalty or interest. The county tax office that sends your bill can tell you how to set it up.
1Over-65 homestead exemption, the biggest benefit
Of all the Texas benefits for seniors, this is the one most worth checking. It only helps homeowners, and you get it through your county appraisal district.
A qualifying Texas residence homestead gets a $140,000 school homestead exemption. That means the first $140,000 of its value isn't taxed by the school district.
Eligible homeowners 65 or older get an extra $60,000 exemption on top of that. Some cities and counties add their own 65-plus exemption of at least $3,000.
These amounts are new. Voters approved the increase on Nov. 4, 2025, and the state confirms it's in effect.
By our math, using the state's 2025 school tax rates, the extra $60,000 is worth about $340 to $480 a year in school operations tax, if your home's taxable value is high enough to use all of it. Your district's debt tax would push that higher. City and county taxes are separate.
If you already have a school tax ceiling, often called the freeze, your bill works differently. Ask your appraisal district what changes for you.
Call your county appraisal district to check whether the over-65 exemption is already on your homestead. If it's missing, find out whether you need Form 50-114 and what filing options you have now. The general application deadline is before May 1.
The bottom line
If you own your home and you're 65 or older, call your county appraisal district first. Ask whether the over-65 exemption is on your homestead. If it isn't, ask the district how to apply now and whether you need Form 50-114.
If you're between 55 and 64, start with the free sign-ups: myWalgreens and Michaels Rewards. Then move a regular errand or two to the right day: Ross on Tuesday, Brookshire's on Tuesday or Thursday, and Kohl's on Wednesday once you turn 60.
If money is tight, apply for SNAP with the shorter form if everyone at home is 60 or older. Ask about CEAP before the next big electric bill. A call to 2-1-1 gets you a paper SNAP application.

Questions people also ask
Do senior citizens get a discount at Walmart?
Walmart doesn't publish a senior discount of its own that we could find. The one official saving tied to it comes through AARP: members get $40 off a Walmart+ annual membership. That's more than AARP's $15 first-year dues with automatic renewal. If you already pay for Walmart+, the discount starts when your current billing cycle ends.
What free stuff can I get at 60?
Not much is completely free at 60. If everyone in your home is 60 or older, you can use Texas's shorter SNAP application with three-year approval, and Brookshire's gives 5 percent off groceries on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Truly free perks come later: METRO Houston rides at 70, and free state park entry for people born before Sept. 1, 1930. At 65, the Senior Parklands Passport costs nothing and cuts park entry in half.
What age do you have to be to get senior discounts in Texas?
Senior discount ages in Texas run from 55 to 70, depending on the place. Walgreens, Ross, Michaels, Luby's and Goodwill Central Texas start at 55, while Kohl's, Brookshire's and the shorter SNAP form start at 60. State parks, DART, METRO half fare, Medicaid for the Elderly and the property tax exemption start at 65, and METRO rides in Houston are free at 70. Denny's discount depends on AARP membership, not age.
What are the new benefits for seniors in 2026?
In Texas, the big change is a higher school homestead exemption: $140,000 for a qualifying residence homestead, up from $100,000, plus an extra $60,000 exemption for eligible homeowners 65 and older. Voters approved the increase on Nov. 4, 2025.
Does Texas have a property tax break for seniors?
Yes. Eligible homeowners 65 or older get an extra $60,000 school homestead exemption on top of the $140,000 exemption for a qualifying residence homestead. It's a homestead exemption, so you must own the home and apply with your county appraisal district, generally before May 1.
