A Guide to Retail Store Lighting
Retail stores are the places that help us meet our day-to-day needs like- but not limited to- daily groceries, clothing, electronics, and stationery etc. Easy accessibility to things along with reasonable product pricing help you beat your next-door retail store and win your customer loyalty. In this guide we may talk about right kind of lighting for your retail store and the impact it has on the customers.
The four basic types of retail store lighting work wonder for different set-ups. They are:
1. General/ Ambient Lighting
2. Task Lighting
3. Accent Lighting
4. Decorative Lighting
Now that you know how lighting is categorized, let us throw some light on how each of these functions and what you’d require where:
1. General/ Ambient Lighting: Going by the name, general lighting implies main light source of the store. With this, you make sure there are no dark patches anywhere in the store so people can easily navigate around and feel comfortable doing so. It should neither be gloomy nor be too bright.
2. Task Lighting: This lighting is more of task-oriented lighting. The focused lighting emitted by these fixtures helps better illuminate areas that require more lighting like at store entrance and exit, fitting rooms, and billing and customer service counters.
3. Accent Lighting: If you are a high-end clothing brand or makeup/ jewelry brand where less is more, accent lighting helps accentuate the glam quotient of the said products. It helps highlight specific areas in the store, so the products pop out, signifying their importance. You could use this kind of lighting on New Launch/ Hot Selling products’ desk, to emphasize a piece of art or décor, and in display lighting etc.
4. Decorative Lighting: These are artistically crafted pieces that are not of much significance when it comes to lighting but they are very important if you wish to add layers of beauty or drama to your store. Chandeliers and wall sconces work as pieces of art and add depth to an area.
While some retail stores (the ones selling make-up and clothing) might require all of these types in place, daily grocery stores may just suffice with ambient lighting and task lighting. For ambient lighting- a major source of lighting in every store- you’d want to cut down on costs because they remain turned ON all the times and generally amount to major running costs. You could go in for LED Tubes or LED Panels (depending on the size of the store) and look forward to cost-efficient and energy-efficient technology.
