Hymenectomy
There is a myth that the hymen is the barrier denoting a woman’s virginity. This myth has long been debunked, as the hymen must already be partially open to allow for menstruation in all women of childbearing age. The hymen is designed to move with pressure.
While sexual intercourse can tear the hymen, there are other reasons the hymen may be damaged or broken, such as from:
Tampon usage
Masturbation by inserting objects in the vagina
Bicycle riding
Certain sports
A pelvic exam, on rare occasions, especially if performed by a doctor who is not a top OB/GYN in Queens, NYC
Repairing the Damage
Just as the hymen can be broken or easily damaged, it can also be thick and rigid, have too few or too small openings, or be completely closed over, resulting in an imperforate hymen. An imperforate hymen may be caught at birth or may not be discovered until the onset of menstruation.
There are several reasons for performing a hymenectomy, including:
Decreased comfort or pain experienced during sexual intercourse
Absence of normal menstruation, which can cause the blood to back up into your vagina, uterus, or fallopian tubes into your abdomen, a life-threatening condition
Severe abdominal pain during your periods
Septate hymen surgery or a microperforate hymenectomy can resolve some issues. A septate hymen has two small holes, but doesn’t respond to pressure. A microperforate hymen is rigid and may have several tiny holes, but again, it hinders menstruation, and intercourse may be uncomfortable to very painful. Your gynecologist assesses and advises you on all your options.
The Hymenectomy Procedure
Before your procedure, be sure to let your OB/GYN know about any allergies to or problems with medication, anesthesia or Novocain. List the medicines you currently take. Discuss any past surgeries and your history of blood clots or bleeding problems. Make sure your doctor knows about any other medical or health problems you may have. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia, although occasionally, your gynecologist recommends a general anesthetic. If given a local, you may also receive a sedative to help you relax.
The surgery is a simple outpatient procedure that can even be accomplished in your doctor’s office in Forest Hills, Queens. Your hymen is opened with scissors or a scalpel, and the tissue is cut away. To close the incisions, your gynecologist uses absorbable sutures that dissolve on their own. After the effects of the anesthesia wear off, you can go home.
