What You Need To Know About Early Decision & Early Action Decisions
U.S. colleges and universities will start releasing admissions decisions for Early Decision (ED) applications around December 15 to late-December and for Early Action (EA) between mid-December to early February. The two biggest benefits of applying EA and ED is receiving decisions earlier than the Regular Decision (RD) decision release which typically happens in March with the last day being April 1 and the statistical advantage of an increased acceptance rate.
Decisions will be released via mail, email, or through the college’s online portal. It is important to know how colleges will notify you of decisions. If the college offers an online portal, you will want to check in to confirm the status of the application.
Colleges normally release one of the following decisions during the EA and ED rounds: admit, defer, or deny.
Early Decision
If accepted Early Decision, then you are bound to attend the school and will withdraw all applications elsewhere. If you are deferred ED, then the ED binding agreement is released and you are still in the application pool and will be evaluated again in Regular Decision. If you are denied ED, then you most likely would have been denied RD as well. This decision is finalized and you cannot apply again until next year.
