Lyocell, derived from cellulose, is known as a man-made fiber. It is popularly known by the brand name ‘Tencel.’ Lyocell, a type of rayon fiber, is manufactured in a closed-loop method through a solvent spinning technique, wherein the cellulose undergoes a limited chemical change. Lyocell fibers are widely used in the textile industry in a broad range of apparels and home textiles. These fibers are also used in the medical industry in the production of medical equipment and surgical products.
Currently, only two companies have the ability to produce lyocell fiber product commercially, mainly concentrating in Europe, USA and China. The market players are Lenzing, Hi-Tech Fiber. The production of lyocell fiber increased from 141.3 K MT in 2012 to 222.6 K MT in 2016, with an average growth rate of 12.03%.
Cellulose is one of the most abundant natural resources on earth, and there has been extensive research on the films, plastics, and fibers from this material. This century modified cellulose were investigated with ecofriendly route, lyocell is one among these. Lyocell is not only environmental friendly fiber; it offers more desirable properties like highly crystalline structure in which crystalline domains are continuously dispersed along the fiber axis, good wet strength as well as excellent dry strength, which makes lyocell water-washable. Further, it dye uptake more, shrinks less when wetted by water and dried than other cellulose fibers such as cotton and viscose rayon.
Lyocell fiber can be classified as two types, regular lyocell fiber and crosslinked lyocell fiber. It can be widely used in many industries. Survey results showed that 57.90% lyocell fiber went into apparels industry in 2016, and 25.13% in home textiles industry.
As for the consumption region, China and Other Asian regions are the major consumers. In 2016, China consumed 81.1 K MT lyocell fiber, holding 36.43% share globally.
Market insiders are optimistic on the future market. Lenzing has released its expansion plans in the coming few years, to meet the increasing demand from downstream industries. It is estimated that global lyocell fiber market will be worthy of 459.63 million USD in the year of 2022, with the CAGR of 5.83% during the period of 2016-2022.
