The blue and gold macaw is almost as large as the green winged macaw but in stark contrast it has a dark beak and is almost exclusively royal blue on the back with golden yellow feathers on the ventral side, they have a dark throat patch and a green crown marking from the base of the beak spreading backwards to just above the eyes.
