Liszt Sonata in B minorrn3. Scriabin Sonata #9 ("Black Mass")rn4. Bill Evans "Turn out the Stars"rn5. Oscar Peterson "The Nearness of You"rnrnThe Phantasie in C minor is an improvisatory piece consisting of shifting moods through a free form, and Mozart's prodigious improvisatory skills will be discussed. The Sonata in B minor is considered to be the master work of Lizst, who was the greatest concert pianist of the 19th century and based the themes of this highly romantic piece on the main characters in Goethe's Faust. The "Black Mass" Sonata, arguably the greatest atonal piano solo ever, exhibits Scriabin's unique harmonic vocabulary, his nervous rhythmic complexity, and his expression of the dark evil in the modern world. "Turn out the Stars," which is part of Bill Evans's requiem for his father, is one of the great jazz solos from the pianist who popularized the jazz piano solo. The program concludes with "The Nearness of You" by Hoagy Carmichael, but played in the style of an Oscar Peterson jazz piano solo.
