I have an excellent (British) academic background and have been tutoring for eleven years, focusing exclusively on math for the last eight.
After beginning work here this January I have helped middle and high school pupils as well as several JC students. I cover basic math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, Pre-Calculus, Statistics and ACT tests. At the JC I cover Math 150A, 150B, 155, Intermediate Algebra and have helped a couple of pupils with Stats (15) - the second of which was getting Ds in his tests before he contacted me but after a few weeks' tutoring got a C overall and passed.
In the UK I helped over two hundred people achieve what they wanted, from high-school qualifications (GCSEs, British SATs) to help with fun elementary-level math and number skills or simply helping adults improve their mental arithmetic. I've also worked a lot with people needing to pass high school-equivalence tests to qualify for teacher-training courses.
I am very familiar with the GMAT test, having helped a couple of people prepare for this exam so they could go on to study an MBA.
I can travel to you for no extra fee (within 3-mile radius of my location in downtown Santa Rosa - see map).
I'm aware that people need to enjoy something to focus on learning and I always try to make the lessons fun as well as thorough.
I firmly believe that everyone can get a lot better at math with just effort and guidance. You do not have to "be a math person" to do well. As much as I can I will explain the reasons behind the formulas, the rules, the jargon.
Almost all my pupils State-side so far have said that I explain things in ways that make more sense than what they've heard at school/college or what they've read in their books. This is because I always have one eye on WHY the math happens the way it does. If you understand the simple principles behind math then, a lot of the time, the procedures and answers are obvious!
Math is much easier than you think it is.
What a handful of previous clients/students have said:
"Working with Ben as my tutor totally changed my view on math. With his insight he gave me stronger confidence in the subject of math that I didn't have before and improved my study habits."

"Ben has been tremendous to work with. He is positive, punctual and makes things very easy. Highly recommended. A+"
JM, Santa Rosa Junior College
"Awesome math tutor! I was struggling with Elementary Statistics and I was ready to throw in the towel and was rescued by Ben. I just wish that I had employed him sooner. I look forward to working with him again on my next math endeavor."
KY, Santa Rosa Junior College
"Ben did a great job working my daughter in Algebra.
We liked him instantly and he was very interested and relatable to her and her needs. He took the time to review her book and the material so he could tailor the lesson plans to what she was currently working on and focused particularly on areas that she had trouble with. He had a profound effect on her final Algebra grade!
He is always considerate of our time and schedule and was pleasure to have in my home. I would highly recommend Ben!!! A+"

"I cannot recommend Ben highly enough. At the start of 2009 I decided to pick up where I had woefully left off 30 years previously and study maths again in preparation for the GMAT (MBA pre-qualification).
In the space of 12 months we covered the entire GCSE curriculum [entire high-school curriculum] and at the end of that period I was in a position to comfortably take the exam and achieve a respectable result (had I so wished).
I subsequently hired Ben to tutor my daughter once a week for the school year 09/10 in the lead up to her GCSE exam with excellent results. I have since referred two GCSE students (children of family friends) who now hire Ben for the same purpose.
Ben is extremely committed to the task of raising students to the highest level they can achieve. He is extremely reliable, conscientious and very well organized. And learning with Ben is fun and enjoyable, he mixes a disciplined approach with very good humour. "

"My daughter achieved an A grade in her exam in the summer of 2010, a fantastic achievement especially considering that she was averaging C/D grades prior to Ben's intervention.
He subsequently tutored my son who also passed with flying colours.
I am happy to recommend Ben to anyone serious about improving their Maths exam results."

"Ben taught my son Maths for 2 years. He increased his confidence in his ability and also his enjoyment of the subject and was successful in helping my son to achieve an 'A' Grade GCSE. More importantly however, Ben and my son got along so well and laughed and joked throughout most sessions. He is an extremely nice young man and was an absolute pleasure to have around and I would have no hesitation in recommending him as a Maths tutor."
FF, Brighton, UK
"Ben has been an absolutely wonderful maths tutor for our daughter. She really lacked self confidence before, and working with Ben taught her to see that not only could maths be fun, but also that she was good at it! She loved her lessons with him - best part of her week."
JJ, Brighton, UK
"...many, many thanks to you, and well done for being patient (but knowledgeable and fun) during the tutoring sessions.
Archie got the B grade he was looking for, so is well pleased, while Evie got a C, which as you may recall was her 5th attempt. . . You definitely made the difference! She was totally over the moon when she opened the letter!"

"Had Ben to coach maths to our daughter for exams here in the UK - it looked as if she had no hope of getting them, but we had Ben each week and, surprise, surprise, she passed!! So i can't recommend him highly enough!! Thanks Ben!!"
