Heralding the Coming of Light - A Winter Solstice Celebration - Dec. 20
The 2014 Winter Solstice Celebration in Oak Cliff will see entertainment, various ceremonies, storytelling, children’s crafts, and fortune telling throughout the evening, indoors and out. Sponsored by the Labyrinth Walk Coffee House, this event is on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 6 pm to 9:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff (UUCOC), 3839 W. Kiest Blvd, Dallas, 75233.rnrnThere is no admission or parking fee charge, but please bring a canned good for the needy and, if you have any, empty ink or toner cartridges for the recycling program. Donations will be graciously accepted to cover the cost of the event and performers will accept tips for the time and talent they are donating. rnrn2014 Winter Solstice Line-up and Schedule:rnrnIndoor in Faith Buildingrn~6:00 Welcome by Odin, a Norse God, with the Opening Ceremony led by Spin Goddess Kathy Kinkaidrn~6:30 Rahaim Quazi will beguile you with his unique music.rn~7:00 GloriChanters with members of the UUCOC choir, led by Glorian Mulligan-Stratton, the choir master. rn~7:30 Steve Leach, guitarist and vocalist extraordinaire, accompanied by and Rick O'Connor, percussionistrn~8:00 John Mason, singer, songwriter and musician rn~8:30 Emmeline, a tiny girl who writes acoustic jazz-pop whose original songs tell stories.rn~Feast – nuts, fruits & cookies with cider and hot chocolate by Alice Kinsey & friends.rnrnOutdoorsrn*Earth Loom decorating: A living symbol in the ground demonstrating the weaving together the fabric of community. It helps us unite hands and hearts to build and weave an emblem and instrument of peace. rn*Meditative candle-lit Labyrinth walking: Walking a labyrinth brings a different meaning and experience to everyone. This labyrinth was built in 1999 and maintained by many loving hands. rn*Ritual Yule Log burning: A Yule log is a large, very hard log burned in the hearth as part of a traditional Yule or Christmas celebration in several European cultures and is associated with the winter solstice celebration. rn*9:00 pm sees the start of the Closing Ceremony – a spiral dance will be led by Raven Crow High Priestess Pam Kincaid with rhythms provided by Drums, Not Guns, a non-profit, whose members believe that people enjoying and playing music together reminds of us of our common humanity.rnrnIndoors in Charityrn~Storytellers Twice Upon a Time Storytellers Gene and Peggy Helmick-Richardson will entertain you with yuletide tales intermittently throughout the evening. With a combined 45 years, this duo has been telling stories together for 14 years and served as the annual Winter Solstice celebration storytellers for 13 years. rnrnIndoors in Hope rn*7:30 - 8:30 Fortune Tellersrn*Children’s crafts will be available with Tyler Pittmonrn*Feast – nuts, fruits & cookies with cider and hot chocolate by Alice Kinsey & friendsrnrnParking is available at the Church’s two lots and at neighboring churches.
